As the cooler temperatures arrive across the UK, many of our domestic and commercial clients begin to wonder about the best practices for their air conditioning systems during the winter months.

What Should I Do With My Air Conditioning Over Winter?

At A.S Cooling Ltd, we understand that proper maintenance and preparation are key to ensuring the longevity, efficiency, and reliable performance of your units. While modern air conditioning systems are robust, a little attention now can prevent costly issues come spring.

The primary goal during winter is to protect your unit from the elements and ensure it remains in optimal condition for when it’s needed again. For most standard air conditioning units, particularly the outdoor compressor/condenser unit of a split system, the approach differs slightly from a heat pump, which operates year-round.

For Standard Air Conditioning Units (Cooling Only):

Isolate the Power Supply: This is a crucial first step for safety and prevention. Locate the outdoor electrical disconnect switch, typically a small box mounted on the wall near your external unit. Switch the power to the "off" position. This prevents the unit from accidentally activating during an unseasonably warm spell, which could cause damage if internal components are frozen or obstructed.

Thorough Cleaning: Over the autumn months, leaves, twigs, and general debris can accumulate around and even inside your outdoor unit. Carefully remove any foliage from the immediate vicinity of the unit, ensuring at least 60 centimetres of clear space on all sides for adequate ventilation. Gently brush away any debris from the top and sides of the unit. While cleaning, inspect for any obvious signs of damage or wear.

To Cover or Not To Cover? This is a common point of discussion. For a standard air conditioning unit, a full, non-breathable cover is generally discouraged. Such covers can trap moisture, leading to condensation, which in turn can cause rust, corrosion, and the growth of mould or mildew within the unit's delicate components. Furthermore, a tight, enclosed space can provide an appealing nesting site for rodents and insects, who may chew through electrical wiring.

Instead, if you wish to provide some protection, consider a breathable cover that only shields the top of the unit from heavy snowfall or falling debris, while leaving the sides open for ventilation. A simple piece of plywood secured on top can achieve this. Many modern units are designed to withstand British winters without any cover at all, providing they are clean and unobstructed.

For Heat Pump Systems (Heating and Cooling):

It is vital to remember that heat pump systems should never be covered in winter. Unlike cooling-only units, heat pumps operate continuously throughout the colder months to provide heating for your property. Covering a heat pump will restrict airflow, severely impairing its ability to extract heat from the outside air and potentially causing significant damage to the compressor. Simply ensure your heat pump is kept clear of leaves, snow, and ice build-up throughout the winter.

Indoor Unit Considerations:

Regardless of your system type, the indoor units (such as wall-mounted or ducted systems) require less specific winterisation. However, it is an excellent time to:

Clean or Replace Filters: A clean filter ensures optimal airflow and system efficiency, which is particularly important if you use your indoor unit for supplemental heating or as part of a heat pump system.

Check for Draughts: Ensure windows and doors in areas served by your air conditioning are properly sealed to prevent heat loss, reducing the workload on your heating system.

Professional Servicing:

Ultimately, the most comprehensive way to prepare your system for winter and ensure its readiness for the warmer months ahead is to schedule a professional service. At A.S Cooling Ltd, our experienced engineers can perform a thorough inspection, identify any potential issues, clean internal components, and ensure your system is operating efficiently. This proactive approach can prevent minor issues from escalating and extend the lifespan of your valuable air conditioning investment, whether for a commercial establishment or a domestic residence. By taking these straightforward steps, you can ensure your air conditioning unit is well-prepared for the winter and ready to provide efficient cooling when spring arrives.
